A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine which is somewhat like a forklift. It allows the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machinery are mostly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are utilized for transporting pallets and finishing certain jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly near the ground. The operator is able to direct the machinery to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level that makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are situated on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then whole platform can be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be utilized to finish these particular tasks at some companies instead.
